PURETIMES: FIGMENT participatory art event

As you may know, I have been very involved in the development of FIGMENT on Governors Island over the last few years. I am now writing to ask your support for FIGMENT to create a free participatory arts experience this summer for the people of New York and Boston that welcomes everyone to participate as a creator and collaborator.

FIGMENT began in 2007 as a free annual participatory arts event. It has grown significantly each year since, in 2009 serving over 13,000 participants through the FIGMENT event and over 40,000 visitors to its summer-long sculpture garden and minigolf course. Now in 2010, FIGMENT will hold an arts event in New York (on June 11-13), and in Boston (June 5), as well as create a summer-long interactive sculpture garden, an artist-designed minigolf course, and an architectural pavilion (in partnership with the ENYA Committee of the AIA NY Chapter and the SEAoNY). While participation from artists and volunteers has grown rapidly, funding has not scaled as quickly. We need your support to make FIGMENT’s programs happen this year.

Three of 17 planned projects for the 2010 FIGMENT Sculpture Garden: Temple of Wonder by Jen Upchurch, Douglas Hart, and Bryan Cates; Treehouse by Benjamin Jones; and Sparky’s Wheel of Tesla by Kathleen and Jesse Green.

FIGMENT does something that no other arts organization can do: it reaches out to everyone, offering that anyone can come and be a part of its programs, not just as a passive observer, but as an active participant, as an artist. FIGMENT reaches many who do not go to museums, or galleries, or Broadway plays, and offers them a way to take an active part of the art and cultural life of our cities. FIGMENT shows our children that we can all work together to achieve something wonderful, and it shows adults that it’s still ok to play together. This gives us all something to believe in and gives us hope for what the future holds.

And that’s why I’m asking for your support for FIGMENT. Please join me at the annual FIGMENT Groundbreaking art preview & reception on April 28 at the Gershwin Hotel to learn more about FIGMENT’s ambitious 2010 projects, and to meet some of the artists. On World Water Day, Monday, March 22, charity: water will launch UNSHAKEN, a campaign to fund long-term water solutions for areas of greatest need in rural Haiti. charity: water is a non-profit bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. The organization has been funding safe water and sanitation projects in Haiti for two years now, working with local implanting partners Concern Worldwide and Partners In Health. Both partners have more than two decades of experience working on the ground in Haiti.

Since the earthquake on Jan. 12, more than one million people have fled Port-au-Prince to the countryside, where they have minimal or no access to clean, safe water. One-third of the nation lacked access to safe water before the quake; now, the situation is devastating. As the rural communities continue to swell, so does the risk of deadly waterborne diseases. charity: water is committed to supporting long-term water and sanitation solutions in Haiti.

UNSHAKEN tells the stories of eleven areas that have swelled with those displaced since the earthquake and now need long-term water solutions more than ever. From eight-year-old Louis Mackenzie in Kenpech, who relies on a dwindling bottled water supply, to 17-year-old Kiesha Michele, who slept on the streets after her home was destroyed and now lives on an island with only stagnant ponds and unprotected springs – these stories are the basis of the UNSHAKEN campaign. Beginning Monday, each region's story, complete with photos and GPS coordinates, will be published on the UNSHAKEN campaign site. In the coming months, charity: water plans to raise $1.3 million to serve more than 40,000 people in these areas with clean, safe drinking water. 100% of the funds raised will directly fund water projects on the ground.

UNSHAKEN has drawn immense support before officially launching. The non-profit Invisible Children donated the first $100,000 to the campaign, which will provide 5,500 people with clean water. Retailer Urban Outfitters is selling a custom Haiti relief T-shirt, designed by eco-brand Apolis Activism, to fund clean water for at least 1,500 people. This week, South by Southwest festival-goers have already donated thousands of dollars through various new mobile giving platforms.

PURETIMES: a quick hello & update!

As George Bernard Shaw once said, "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man [and woman.]" I am now writing with a highly unreasonable request!

I am a mentor and board member for The Unreasonable Institute, an organization that provides up to 25 young entrepreneurs from every corner of the globe every resource, every skill, and every connection they need to create ventures that are financially sustainable and can measurably improve the lives of millions of people around the globe. The Unreasonable Institute selects these 25 entrepreneurs to attend a 10-week intensive incubation program, where they undergo rigorous entrepreneurial training; receive legal advice, prototype consulting, web hosting and development services; gain access to seed capital; and receive involved mentorship from 50 entrepreneurs and investors like the Co-Founder of Google.org and an entrepreneur who has lifted over 19 million people out of poverty.

The hunger for this idea amongst young entrepreneurs has been incredible. The Unreasonable Institute received 284 applications from 45 countries and has now narrowed down the pool of applicants to 34 finalists. These finalists include former child soldiers from Liberia, Ugandan Refugees, Indian veterinarians, and MIT graduates tackling problems ranging from the transformation of agricultural waste into fertile topsoil and bio-energy to teaching illiterate children how to read through cell phone games.

Now to be chosen to attend the Institute, these 34 finalists are in a race to raise $6,500 (the cost of attending the program). In raising this capital, they demonstrate their entrepreneurial mettle and secure the chance to attend the Institute at no cost. The outcome of this race is up to you.

The City of Dreams Pavilion is an international design competition to design and build a pavilion as a central gathering place on Governors Island. This competition is unique in that it asks designers to source their materials as part of the design, and to have as little environmental impact as possible in the sourcing, construction, and de-installation of the pavilion. Reused materials, or materials that can be reused after the pavilion comes down, are of special interest here. The competition is open to architects and designers working in any discipline.

The Global Cocoa Project is a collaborative initiative produced by Project Hope & Fairness and the Global Giving Circle.

President Obama Sets Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Target for Federal Operations

Target to Drive Energy Cost Reductions in Federal Operations, Creating Clean Energy Jobs

WASHINGTON, DC – President Barack Obama today announced that the Federal Government will reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution by 28 percent by 2020. Reducing and reporting GHG pollution, as called for in Executive Order 13514 on Federal Sustainability, will ensure that the Federal Government leads by example in building the clean energy economy. Actions taken under this Executive Order will spur clean energy investments that create new private-sector jobs, drive long-term savings, build local market capacity, and foster innovation and entrepreneurship in clean energy industries.

As the single largest energy consumer in the U.S. economy, the Federal Government spent more than $24.5 billion on electricity and fuel in 2008 alone. Achieving the Federal GHG pollution reduction target will reduce Federal energy use by the equivalent of 646 trillion BTUs, equal to 205 million barrels of oil, and taking 17 million cars off the road for one year. This is also equivalent to a cumulative total of $8 to $11 billion in avoided energy costs through 2020.

“As the largest energy consumer in the United States, we have a responsibility to American citizens to reduce our energy use and become more efficient,” said President Obama. “Our goal is to lower costs, reduce pollution, and shift Federal energy expenses away from oil and towards local, clean energy.”

Federal Departments and Agencies will achieve greenhouse gas pollution reductions by measuring their current energy and fuel use, becoming more energy efficient and shifting to clean energy sources like solar, wind and geothermal. Examples of agency actions that are underway are available on the White House Council on Environmental Quality website and can be found at www.whitehouse.gov/ceq.

On October 5, 2009, President Obama signed Executive Order 13514 on Federal Sustainability, setting measureable environmental performance goals for Federal Agencies. Each Federal Agency was required to submit a 2020 GHG pollution reduction target from its estimated 2008 baseline to the White House Council on Environmental Quality and to the Director of the Office of Management and Budget by January 4, 2010. The Federal target announced today is the aggregate of 35 Federal Agency self-reported targets.

Greenhouse gas emissions serve as a useful metric to measure the effectiveness of agency energy and fuel efficiency efforts as well as renewable energy investments. Agencies are already taking actions that will contribute towards achieving their targets, such as installing solar arrays at military installations, tapping landfills for renewable energy, putting energy management systems in Federal buildings, and replacing older vehicles with more fuel efficient hybrid models.

As a next step, the Office of Management and Budget will validate and score each agency’s sustainability plan, assuring a long-term return on investment to the American taxpayer. To ensure accountability, annual progress will be measured and reported online to the public.

We are thrilled to announce the dates for FIGMENT 2010 and invite artists and audiences to become a part of the project. FIGMENT 2010 will be held on June 11-13, 2010, on Governors Island in New York Harbor.

FIGMENT 2010 will be our fourth annual free participatory arts event. In 2009, over 13,000 participants came to FIGMENT to interact and engage with over 400 participatory arts projects in every conceivable medium, including interactive sculpture, performance, music, social experiments, games, and lectures. This year we expect FIGMENT to grow again, and will be accepting submissions for the FIGMENT event beginning on February 15.

In addition to the FIGMENT event, we are pleased to announce three Calls for Participation that are now open for projects on Governors Island to be installed for the entire season:

Call for Proposals: City of Dreams Pavilion

An architectural design competition, in partnership with the Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) Committee of the AIA and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY). Now they are heading to a museum for a show and tell. Smoke takes place in some mysterious hatch in the Chelsea Art Museum, where among other offerings, the frolic includes a showcase of artifacts and inventions that were inspired from their trip, live performances from Pop Opera singer Val Geffner, and the Stumblebum Brass Band, among others, and a funky minimal laced DJ set from Berlin’s newly sprouted NIko Wessels. The rabbit hole, according to its password protected website is an investigation of topsy turvy consciousness involving experiential events, artist curation, a global collective and a manifesto, that founder concocted through hosting salon sessions and travelling as a cultural journalist. The rabbit hole is a reflection of 4 key emerging trends:

1) Knowledge unraveling: The questioning of discourses; a revisit of the value attributed to icons, and the emergence of a topsy turvy consciousness

Creator and chief instigator of the rabbit hole Samina Virani is a culture journalist and urban anthropologist investigating social trends and behaviors across the Americas, Europe and parts of Asia. “As the repertoire of global icons across all infrastructures and systems – politics, religion, finance, to name of a few – has gone rather topsy turvy, an enormous space is emerging where every discourse is called to attention. Things are not what they seemed, or rather, perhaps they were never what they were. Traditional signifiers that connote value, identity and to which we attribute meaning have gone rather topsy turvy. Forget crumply bank notes, oil reserves, and platinum credit cards; now value is attributed to saving the planet from peril.

The rabbit hole dives into the topsy turvy nature of this marvelous current predicament - value shifting and open questioning - inviting imagination and creative consciousness to playfully embrace the unique dialogue that is emerging, and to propel a new and spirited freedom of interpretation.

2) The importance of the fantasy discourse.

Emerging is the notion that the realizations of fantasy is a benchmark of the modern world, with festivals like UK’s Bestival and the US’s Burning Man spearheading this behavior. The rabbit hole is based on this play on fantasy and imaginary identities; a portal into one’s favorite fairytale; a leap into the extraordinary, into wonderland. The rabbit hole actively encourages the delving into the eccentri imagination of all its members.

3) Creative collaboration participation

The rabbit hole events are committed to creative collaboration and participation, encouraging storytelling, as well as an open source and democratic participatory creative process.

4) An appeal to mystery, intrigue, the challenge of the pursuit.

In these times, everyone needs a 5-year plan.

In the words of Aaron Sinift, who conceived and created this work...

In this era of awakening and change we see that we can be greater than the sum of our parts.
• 5 Year Plan was conceived in honor of Mahatma Gandhi, in response to the need for creative, unconventional solutions to the problems facing the world today.
• 5 Year Plan is an international project that brings artists, craftspeople and collectors together to benefit Doctors Without Borders (MSF), a relief organization that provides lifesaving medical care around the world.
• 5 Year Plan activates the power of individuals to become the change they seek by joining the creativity of artists, the courage of MSF workers, and the support of art lovers into a sustainable social architecture where everyone wins.
• 5 Year Plan is a collection of 32 screen-printed artworks by 32 contemporary artists. Contributors include Yoko Ono, Francesco Clemente, Donald Baechler, Chris Martin and Julie Doucet, as well as underknown artists such as Tamara Gonzales, Tim Wehrle, and Pushpa Kumari. The artworks are printed on khadi cloth and bound into a limited edition of cloth books.
• 5 Year Plan celebrates and supports an imperiled way of life. The books are handmade at every step by local weavers, printers, and bookbinders in India. The cloth for the books is produced by Gandhi Ashram Collectives, which help millions of rural villagers survive by sustaining local industries and agriculture.
5YP will be published in Jaipur in an edition of 500 copies. 65 copies will be signed by all the artists; each signed copy will have hand-embroidered covers produced by the Indian clothing designer Alpana Bawa. All profits from sales of 5 Year Plan go to Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and to fund the next 5YP benefit project. This first 5YP project can raise $40,000 for MSF.

The lovely folks at Yahoo! have empowerd me to commit random acts of kindness during the holiday season. As I'm currently in Berlin, I poped into Cafe Picnick today to buy the local Turkish card players tea. They were very confused and I was elated! I encourage you all to try it! It doesn't have to cost money. For example, you can help a someone carry their suitcase up the stairs in the subway station, as I did at the U-bahn in Kreutzberg, Berlin. It's so easy! You in?
